Newmarket - Sash Window
Analysis, conservation and reinstatementAn important late 17th century vertical sash window was discovered in the Palace House Mansion, in Newmarket, the royal hunting seat of Charles II. As the building was completed in 1671, the window pre dates all other known early examples, such as those found in St James' Palace.
The discovery of this unique surviving example is considered by English Heritage to be the most significant find within the whole of Europe concerning the origin of the counter-balanced, vertically sliding sash window.
